Intro:

Over the past few years, I've gone from sitting on the sidelines (a.k.a. my couch) to finishing a number of 5k's, 10k's, half marathons, and a tri-relay. In late fall of 2011 is when I began my journey into CrossFit and somewhere in between all of that I found myself to be 40 lbs. lighter.

Please join me on my never-ending journey of self-improvement. Better, faster, stronger is the goal!

Begining the weekend with huge a 5k - PR!!!

As a last minute decision I decided to register for the Lawyers Have a Heart 10k in downtown Washington, D.C. with my awesome gym team challenge buddies.  This was to be a first race for one of my buddies, and we planned to run it together and finish together!  I was super excited knowing that no matter what happened my finish time for this race was going to be a P.R.!  I had only ever run 1 10k, which was Zooma and my finish time then was 1:29.  I have improved so much since that race last year.

About an hour or so into our arrival we heard the announcement that the 10k race was being changed to a 5k due to a heat advisory for the area. Craziness!  In fact, they mentioned that some of the officials in the area were trying to have the race canceled!

So a 5k race it was!  There were over 3,000 runners for this race and they set up 3 corrals.  My friends and I started in the second corral, and by 7:35 we were off!

Mile 1 - 10:50 (lots of weaving!)
Mile 2 - 10:20
Mile 3 - 9:30!!! (Second fastest mile ever for me!)
with only .14 miles left we sprinted to the finish!

Official time: 31:54
PR - by 5+ minutes since last year!
A little background, in 2009 I completed my first ever 5k in 43+ minutes. In 2010 I ran a couple 5k races and for the life of me, I could not get myself out of the 37/38 minute 5k time.

All in all, I am just so happy and proud of myself! There were times where I never thought I'd get under 35 minutes. Just goes to show that persistence and cross-training!!! makes a huge difference.
